The Avengers
Jan 29th 6.8 Spectacular action scenes but lacking in powerful story telling to keep me interested throughout. A long run time for the content and by the end I was like "Thank God it's over over...great."

The Artist
Jan 27th One of those movie that really shows the story through pictures. Worth the watch and a second one at that. Overall Rating 7.8.

A Walk to Remember
Jan 26 Setting aside the fact I have this thing for both Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode since seeing them in Chasing Liberty together when I was much younger this film is a really cheesy romance filled with cliche, bad acting from the support cast and terrible editing that makes itself noticed. Add in some rock music and you have a movie that looks like a soap opera or Saved by the Bell episode. Despite all the cheese you can find some not so smelly scenes in between. Overall rating 4.7.

Beyond the Mat
Jan 20th Wiki Overview: The film focuses on the lives of professional wrestlers outside of the ring, primarily Mick Foley, Terry Funk, and Jake Roberts, as well as some aspiring wrestlers. It focuses on the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) during its rise in popularity, and many other independent wrestlers and organizations. My take: I watched this movie with hopes that it would go more in depth somehow. For example, shitty promotions, horrible shows, injury (more than just glancing by), rehabilitation, drugs including steroids. Yet, the director is not the best at getting the substance that would make this a great documentary. He seems to be hanging around the promotions and trying to make friends instead of asking questions. Also, he is too involved on screen without offering anything to the scene The basic editing (leaving in irrelevant footage like the black wrestler's movie opportunity) and musical choices are terrible frankly and the documentary presents itself like a low budget fan made video. A rare good moment but you could get the same information by just watching the Wrestler with its glaring similarities or doing a bit of reading if you're interested with life behind the scenes. Overall it came off amateurish, opportunist and even staged in some parts. Overall rating 3.9.

Selma
Jan 18th A very good historical drama that shows aspect’s of King’s life that are differing from the saintly image he is often cloaked in. Even leaders are human and this film does a good job of showing King’s weakness as well as his strengths. David Oyelowo plays a very good leading role as Dr. King especially in his delivery of rousing speeches as well as in the more quiet moments with his wife or close advisors. In supporting roles Tom Wilkinson, Stephan James and Tim Roth who play Lyndon Johnson, John Lewis and George Wallace respectively are all exceptional in their delivery and performance on screen. The musical choices bring out the emotion of select scenes that stirs your very own emotions when it is aligned with images of brutality and corruption. The creative decisions in direction and cinematography flow very well to give you a film that is powerful and artistic. Overall rating 7.5

Nightcrawler
Jan 17th The screenplay is one of the most original I’ve seen and the film itself creative and innovative with the use of steady cameras and capturing the film within a film. On the surface it follows the sociopathic Bloom (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who goes to extremes to get what he wants. Digging a little deeper we see a critque of news media and what is deemed “new worthy”. Also, comparisons with news and Hollywood where the story and narrative are most important. Gyllenhaal's performance is fantastic and worth the time. Overall rating. 7.2
