After my “viewing experience” and comparing that with the reviews on IMDB you would think this was a terrorist snuff film. Admittedly, it’s a bit OTT and borderline hentai in some places but it has good action and aesthetically is beautiful. Decent overall.

For sex cannot be admitted to a mere equality among elementary emotions or experiences like eating or sleeping. The moment sex ceases to be a servant it becomes a tyrant.- G.K. Chesterton

I suppose I was expecting more from this film, like my newfound fixation on Montgomery Clift, Barbara Stanwyck is the reason I watched this one, plus the scene shots I’ve seen. I suppose the main problem is character development, only the main character seems a real person, everyone else is just cardboard. The first half was really flat but it kind of picks up around the middle and by the end you are expecting a good piece of bantering and sexual rivarly between Lily and Trenholm but it fails to deliver, we are just given a cookie cutter first half of the 20th century “happy ending”. Hey, I love happy endings, every movie should end with one for me lol (Not serious but I always remember how Truffaut robbed me of that stroll in the Paris snow between the main characters in Shoot the Piano Player) but its got to make sense and have some significance at the end more than just a moral lesson.
